Editor’s letter

Two extraordinary women for this week, one dead and one alive; and two meditations on pain also, and how we cannot let it grind us down.

Anne-Marie Tomchak is the best kind of Irish culchie girl. She’s earthy and authentic but smart, sophisticated, and, by the way, stylish and stunning. And she’s Una Healy’s cousin and Declan Nerney’s niece, so she’s steeped in country, and Irish too.

Anne-Marie’s career path had led her from Morning Ireland to becoming editor of the UK arm of millennial news site Mashable. But life’s not perfect, and she has had her struggles to deal with, too.

Frida Kahlo was also smart, strong and beautiful, and used a life of excruciating pain to make herself a living artwork and to become one of the most influential artists of the modern era. Courtesy of a smash-hit exhibition in the V&A in London, Kahlo is this summer’s style icon and cultural signifier, and we tell her extraordinary story inside.

We also have loads of summer beauty and style; the perfect granola; Rachel’s Asian salads and Lucinda’s guide to Ireland’s best gastrobars. Everything you could want for a summer Sunday.
