Top tips and make-up picks

Whether I’m dressed up or down, I’m all about a classic ponytail for an effortlessly chic look. A ponytail, I always say, is like the white T-shirt of beauty: it’s not the most exciting, but it is necessary and oh-so versatile! They don’t call a ponytail the ‘hair facelift’ for nothing, you know. Best of all, you don’t even have to wash your hair beforehand. Quite often, I just use something like AlfaParf Style Stories Texturizing Dry Shampoo, above, €20, as it gives instant support and absorbs excess oiliness, for lightweight and fragranced hair. I won’t insult your hair know-how by explaining how to do a ponytail, but what I will tell you is to secure the tail with an elastic band, and then wrap a small piece of hair from the ponytail around the elastic to conceal it. Pin the piece of hair with a bobby pin or two to anchor it securely. Hair accessories are all the rage with the cool gals at the races. See House of Lafayette, Gucci or Simone Rocha. If you have the time, use a curling tongs like the ghdCurve Soft Curl tong, below, €149, to curl the end section of your ponytail. For extra polish, use a little hair serum or even a bit of Vaseline around the hairline to ensure you have an extra sleek look with no flyaways.
