EUROPE EYES ON FINAL-DAY GLORY

- Jerome Reilly

EUROPE take a 10-6 lead into the final day’s play at the Ryder Cup in Paris today.

It means that Europe need just four-and-a-half points from a possible 12 to win the tournament after a commanding performance yesterday. Rory McIlroy will lead the charge — he is first out against Justin Thomas just after 11am.

And the record books are in Europe’s favour. Only twice before has a team come from four points down on Saturday night to win the Ryder Cup. Those two occasions were both in the US, at Brookline in 1999 and the so-called the Miracle of Medinah in 2012.

European captain Thomas Bjorn said: “It’s been a good day, and we’ll have to take all that in, and use the positives from that.

“But Valderrama, Brookline, Medinah, there are plenty of examples of these scorelines meaning a lot until you get down to the singles, and there are 12 singles to be played tomorrow. So we keep going hard.

“I’ve seen so many times what the singles does. It’s a completely different game and that takes a lot of refocusing. We go again.”

But Paul McGinley, the winning captain of Europe in 2014 and the first Irishman to captain Europe’s Ryder Cup side, was more bullish. “The Americans look like they are out of gas. They look tired, they’re not fresh, they look like a team that’s struggling. It’s going to be a monumental effort for them to come back from where they are,” he said.

World No 1 Dustin Johnson still believes USA can win, saying: “No [it isn’t over], absolutely not. As I recall, at Medinah, pretty sure we were down 10-6 going into Sunday and ended up losing. So I think it might be our turn to flip
