Soprano with the zero-gravity bra

- Sarah Slater

THE world’s best-selling soprano, Sarah Brightman, plans to wow Irish music lovers with a concert next autumn.

Brightman (58) told the Sunday Independent that it was “hard to believe” the last time she held a concert here was in 2001 as part of her La Luna tour.

“I’m looking forward to coming back to Ireland to perform professionally and I’ve always loved Dublin.

“The last time I was here on a private visit was 2015. My visit to Ireland then is a bit of a funny story, really. I was in the middle of doing my training to become a cosmonaut in Russia.”

In 2012, it was reported that Brightman paid an estimated £30m or €34m to be one of three passengers aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket tourist flight. However, her trip never happened as she withdrew from training, citing “family reasons”.

Laughing, Brightman continued: “I was in the lovely department store Brown Thomas and looking in the lingerie section, as I had been told that they had a great bra section.

“I’m sure the sales assistant must have thought I was a bit unusual when I asked her for bras that would be good for dealing with zero gravity in space.

“I remember her widening her eyes more and more when I told her what I was doing, but she carried on very professionally.”

She is releasing her new album, titled HYMN on Friday. A full-length theatrical performance, HYMN: Sarah Brightman In Concert will hit Irish cinemas on Thursday.
