Runners put their best feet forward in loving memory
RUNNING to remember loved ones and friends who have died will once again bring runners, walkers and spectators to the Phoenix Park in Dublin.
The 5km Remembrance Run will begin in the park at 11am next Sunday at Chesterfield Avenue. Organisers hope more people will register at remembrancerun.ie. A Wall of Remembrance will be erected near the finish on Furze Road in the park.
Every year, this wall is filled with names and messages to people whom the runners and walkers wish to remember in a special way. Favourite memories of departed loved ones can be submitted to appear on a giant screen during the event.
Official starters this year are Ronnie Delaney (83), winner of the 1,500m gold medal in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, and Harry Gorman, who will celebrate his 89th birthday at the event.
Harry, who joined Cabra Athletic Club in 1950, won national titles in many races, , and still enjoys keeping fit.
Free shuttle buses for participants leave from 8.30am onwards from Parkgate Street for the Phoenix Monument.
Entry charges are €20 for adults, plus booking fee, or family-of-four tickets for €50, plus booking fee.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the death of runner Noel Carroll who was a big influence in getting the first Dublin Marathon up and running.
