Caroline Foran’s Westport
Westport is one of my favourite staycation destinations. I’m particularly fond of it in winter, as you have an excuse for cosy gear and staying put in a snug.
I’d arrive on a Friday and stay in The Wyatt, a lovely three-star hotel that’s right in the centre of everything.
We’d drop in to Matt Molloy’s for a hot port to warm my belly, and then to Cians on Bridge Street for food. I can’t resist a restaurant with a simple, stylish interior.
On Saturday, after some eggs, rashers and hash browns, we’d throw on thermals and head out to Croagh Patrick or Murrisk. We’d go for a walk, taking in the fresh air that’s so much better in the west.
I’d visit my uncle’s grave, near Croagh Patrick; it’s one of the most peaceful places.
We’d stay out west for the day, heating up in Campbell’s — a ‘spit on the floor’ locals’ pub, where you’d be laughed at for ordering a latte.
Dinner would be in Cronin’s Sheebeen in Rosbeg. The thatched roof and all the nooks and crannies make you feel like you’re in The Quiet Man. It’s particularly charming when it’s icy outside.
On weekends in Ireland, I prioritise my sleep, so Sunday morning would be Netflix in bed, and then a brunch of champions in The Creel on Westport Pier. Then a brief foray into Foxford Woollen Mills, and the drive home.
