CATCH-UP TV - ION CASE YOU MISSED IT...

- EMILY HOURICAN

Wolf Hall RTE Player, until February 22, episodes 1-4 The great joy of the (relatively) new RTE player is the discovery of all sorts of excellent series tucked away, ready to be watched at will. This, Wolf Hall , is an adaptation of the first two of Hilary Mantel’s double-Booker-winning novels about Thomas Cromwell, Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies, covering Cromwell’s astonishingly rapid rise to power at the court of Henry VIII, through to the death of Sir Thomas More and Cromwell’s success in freeing the king of his marriage to Anne Boleyn.

The acting is terrific, Mark Rylance as a stunningly low-key Cromwell, Damian Lewis as the swaggering Henry VIII and Claire Foy as a believably demanding Anne Boleyn. Peter Kosminsky (The State, The Promise) directs, and the series was nominated for eight Emmys and three Golden Globes. If you haven’t yet seen it or indeed if you have and want to watch again, at leisure, now’s your chance.

Famous and Fighting Crime Channel4.com, episode 1 Well, the clue’s in the name really… the premise here is that UK crime figures are going up while budgets go down, meaning the boys in blue are relying more and more on a group of 12,000 volunteer officers, known as special constables. If that’s not bad enough, they have now added five celebrities to the ranks.

There’s Katie Piper, TV presenter and activist, herself the victim of a vicious acid attack in 2008; Penny Lancaster, former model and current wife of Rod Stewart; Gogglebox star Sandi Bogle; comedian Marcus Brigstocke and Jamie Laing from Made In Chelsea.

These five celebrities head for the mean streets with the Cambridgeshire Police, responding to 999 calls and facing real, sometimes dangerous situations, including rowdy weekend city centres, and high-risk drug raids, scuffles in shops and domestic disputes. At one point, Lancaster is told to “F**k off or I’ll stab you with a dirty needle”. Clearly, it’s not exactly another day at the office for any of them.
