Volunteers join search for Icelander missing in Dublin

-

A MAJOR search began in Dublin yesterday for missing Icelander Jon Jonsson. Some 80 volunteers joined relatives and friends of the father of four in a systematic search in the northside from 11am.

Mr Jonsson (41), who works as a taxi driver in Iceland, arrived in Ireland with his fiancee Kristjana Gudjonsdottir (25) on February 8 to take part in a poker tournament.

He was last seen on Saturday, February 9. He left McGettigan’s Bar, attached to the Bonnington Hotel on the Swords Road in Whitehall, shortly after 11am. He left his phone, passport and his wallet behind him but brought a large sum of cash.

Mr Jonsson walked northwards on the Swords Road and the last sighting was near Highfield Hospital. Twelve members of his family travelled to Dublin to join the search, including his mother Hanna. Sister-in-law Katrin Birgisdottir said: “I cannot put into words how his daughters must be feeling. All I would say is that Jon, if you read this, please come home because we need you.”

A search and rescue specialist from Iceland had helped the family map out a large area in the north city.

The large number of searchers walked the area and put up posters.

Jon is described as being six foot tall and of a medium build, with short brown hair and was wearing a black padded jacket when he was last seen. He has a dragon tattoo on his left arm.

His family have been searching for two weeks and expressed gratitude for the help they have received.
