Nine injured after falling from lorry after GAA win
NINE people were injured after falling from the trailer of a lorry in Co Wicklow last night while celebrating a Junior B championship victory.
Gardai said nine people were brought to hospitals in Dublin and treated for nonlife threatening injuries.
The incident happened shortly before 7pm when the Enniskerry GAA club’s players were on an elevated platform on the back of an articulated lorry, celebrating a win over Avoca. A metal bar appeared to give way at the back of the truck after the truck pulled off, and a number of players fell onto the road. The emergency services rushed to the scene and injured players and club members were treated by paramedics on site. The injured were brought to Tallaght and St Vincent’s Hospitals for treatment.
In a statement last night the GAA club said there were “no critical or life-threatening injuries”. A spokesman said: “Some players have bad injuries but everyone will be fine.”
A video of the incident was repeatedly shared online last night.
Gardai confirmed last nigh that they are investigating the incident. Roads in the area were closed for a time last night to help treat the injured people and initial enquiries. Local independent councillor Rory O’Connor said there was a great sense of shock in the village last night. “The mood now has gone from peak happiness to a terrible sense of worry for anyone who was hurt. It’s quite a small closeknit community, so something like this is horrible.”
