DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MOVIE STAR
MOONLIGHT MOMENT: Kerri-Nicole Blanc wears the original costume Doris Day wore in the 1951 movie ‘On Moonlight Bay’. The dress features in an exhibition celebrating the life, works and style of the iconic movie star at The Museum of Style Icons, Co Kildare.
IMAGINE your job was to sit with A-list celebrities and go through their most prized and personal possessions. That is the daily task of Athlone man Martin Nolan, Hollywood’s auctioneer to the stars.
The man who sold Michael Jackson’s red leather jacket from the Thriller video and the white dress Marilyn
Monroe slipped into to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to US president John F Kennedy shares tales of hanging out with the world’s superstars. “I have to be nosy and open things up and search and go into the attic — I love my job,” he said.
Of his time spent with Cher in her Malibu home, he recalls how the singer came across an old love letter. “We were overlooking the Pacific ocean telling stories and I opened up a book that read ‘To Cher, Love Tommy’ and I asked ‘Who is Tommy?’ And she said, ‘Oh that’s Tom Cruise! You know we dated for a minute?’ I never knew,” he says.
Now, as part of his work at Julien’s Auctions, he has joined Newbridge Silverware to exhibit a rare collection of garments, jewellery and accessories from the wardrobe of movie icon Doris Day, who famously sang Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be).
The exhibition entitled The Doris Day Show runs until February and will be on display at the Museum of Style in Newbridge, Co Kildare from Tuesday, free to view by the public.
Meanwhile, the property from the estate of Doris
Day goes for auction on April 4, 2020.
