Weekender

- In conversation with Sarah Caden

Anna Daly’s Algarve I’ve spent many a holiday in Portugal and it never disappoints.

I love it so much, we got married there!

We usually self-cater, just outside the old fishing town of Alvor.

It’s a tranquil setting, with incredible views. We’d stay in on Friday night, settle the three kids if they’re with us, and pop open a bottle of bubbles, or a nice white.

On Saturday morning, I’ll drive down to the beach in Alvor

and walk the boardwalk. I love to sit at one of the harbour cafes, have a coffee, and watch the fishermen prepare for the day.

On Saturday, a wander around the cobbled old town of Alvor is a must.

I always drop into the 16th-Century church where we got married. There’s a great fish restaurant called Taverna do Guedes just off the main street. There’s no menu, just the day’s catch. Tell Francisco I sent you.

For a special meal on a Saturday night

— without the children

— we’ll book Vila Joya, a two-Michelin star restaurant near Vilamoura. A breathtaking spot, and the food is a work of art.

We had our wedding in a resort called the Vila Vita Parc,

in Porches, about 20 minutes from Alvor. I love to return there on a Sunday if I’m in the area.

Even if I don’t get to do the fancy stuff on a weekend here,

I always make sure to wander the cobbled streets of Alvor and enjoy the freshest grilled sardines and some local vinho verde. Sun, sardines, crisp white wine. Sometimes the simple things are the best. Anna Daly is co-host of ‘Ireland AM’, weekdays, 7am, and weekends, 9am, on Virgin Media One
