I’m backing the Bern with an AOC chaser

-

WITH The New York Times declaring its endorsement of Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar for US president, it’s time for the Diary to make that call — we’re going for the Bern.

Mr Bernie Sanders, for a start, is one person and not two, something The New York Times doesn’t seem to have factored into its each way betting.

We’d also like to endorse Adam Schiff, who is knocking it out of the park in the impeachment game, and Alexandria OcasioCortez, since we tipped her for greatness here, and she is surely delivering.

But ‘Schiffty’ is too busy tormenting the Trumper in the Senate to run, and AOC is legally too young.

But if you get Bernie, you also get AOC on the campaign trail — because one of the many good things about the Bern is that he may be old, but the likes of AOC love him. Meanwhile his resemblance to Larry David brings its own charisma.

I also believe that unlike Elizabeth Warren, Bernie has a chance of connecting with blue-collar America with lines like the one about Trump having an “allowance” of $200,000 a year from the age of three, while Bernie’s “allowance” was 25 cents — and he was glad of it.

We are constantly being told that America will never elect anyone who is thought to be a communist, which in

America means anyone slightly to the left of, say, Brendan Howlin. But again the Bern can counter this by pointing out that he has been representing Vermont for a long time — and the last time I looked, there wasn’t much communism in Vermont.

Go Bernie.

Arklow may not have had a TD based in the town since the foundation of the State, but since last week’s analysis of the situation, I am pleased to report that some progress has been made.

I was walking into the main car park in the town, and there was a car advertising the services of the Fianna Fail candidate Pat Casey — fair play to him. There were no vehicles emblazoned with the posters and stickers of Fine Gael candidates, but at least the FF man (who is apparently the nephew of Bishop Eamonn Casey) sent a big car down from his base near Glendalough.

There was nobody in the car, as such, not that I could see anyway.

But then maybe members of the Casey team were out and about in Arklow, taking copious notes of the needs of the townspeople — yes, that must be it.

And even if they weren’t, we were still looking at one of the leading contenders caring enough to pay for a few hours of parking.

Cheers mate.
