Louise MacNamara’s Ennistymon

- In conversation with Sarah Caden

I’ve been visiting Ennistymon, Co Clare since I was a child,

on family holidays, musicwriting trips with my twin sister, and weekends with friends. I associate it with switching off, recharging and eating delicious food.

My dad is from Ennistymon, so I usually stay in his family home.

When I arrive, I love to take a quick drive out to Lahinch for a bit of Atlantic air, then head back to Ennistymon for a pint in Daly’s, before strolling home for food.

Up early on Saturday, I’d head for The Cheese Press,

in the centre of the town, which serves ‘Ireland’s best toastie’.

I’d order one, with a local Anam coffee, before hitting the road to Doolin.

There’s a stunning walk that stretches from Fisher Street in Doolin,

along the coast and over to the Cliffs of Moher, with breathtaking views. I’d finish with a dip in the Atlantic in Clahane.

After a brief rest at home, I’d head down to Eugene’s Bar,

which is worth checking out for the decor and Father Ted shrine alone. Then I’d head over to Little Fox for black dal and tandoor flatbread, or to Byrne’s Restaurant for fresh cod and chips. Then it’s over to Cooley’s House for trad music and another creamy Guinness or two.

Before getting on the road for Dublin on Sunday,

I’d visit Unglert’s Bakery for some pastries, and then I can’t leave Ennistymon without going for yet another stroll. Louise MacNamara is one half of singing duo Heathers, and is Acting BA (Hons) Commercial Modern Music Course Leader at BIMM Institute Dublin. See bimm.ie
