The lessons I’m taking with me out of lockdown

- KATY HARRINGTON

I’M struggling with lockdown lethargy. While I’ve had days of feeling grateful, collected and balanced, at times I’ve also felt wiped, mentally and physically. Yesterday, for example, I ate a block of brie in bed, refused to get dressed and got ridiculously angry at Selling Sunset on Netflix. I am trying to keep in mind that this will end and there are even a few lessons I want to take with me out of lockdown.

1: I promise not to go back to using WhatsApp as my only mode of communication. Instead of burying my phone, staring at it in disgust or throwing it across the room when it rings, I will pick it up and say hello. Even if it’s someone offering me PPI. Lockdown lesson one is what Bob Hoskins already told us years ago — it’s good to talk.

2: I’ve smoked like a trooper during lockdown but upon return to regular rules, I will give up (again). Now that my beloved menthols are banned, this should be easy.

3: I will exercise every day — a short run, a walk, a 15-minute HIIT class that makes me look like a sweaty fool, it doesn’t matter, just as long as it’s something. This rule is effective immediately, from tomorrow.

A few beauty-related lessons I’m continuing with — first, showering every two to three days is perfectly acceptable if you have what I call a little birdbath in the sink on the non-shower days. Second, I will never again spend £20 on an eye mask when a few slices of cold cucumber or used tea bags that have been chilling in the fridge do a better job every time. I vow to eat less processed food. Finally, I will remember to take pleasure in the little things every day. Those are mine, what are yours?
