Cinemas are slowly opening although at the time of going to press the only definite new films screening are Australian horror

Black Water: Abyss and potentially the animation Dreambuilders (July 10). While cinema normality is being rebuilt, streaming options include a broad selection with special mention for Irish streaming service Volta which will be gifting free movies every Wednesday until August (www. volta.ie/viewitonvolta).

For kids, this week sees the release of Frozen 2 (Disney+) which doesn’t quite match the first film but will no doubt enchant the target audience. For slightly older kids there is The Great Gilly Hopkins

(Amazon Prime), a sweet 2015 film about a plucky girl starring Kathy Bates, Glenn Close and Julia Stiles. New release Think Like a Dog

(tomorrow, iTunes) stars Megan

Fox and is about a 12-year-old boy who, er, thinks like a dog. Fart jokes and revenge on bullies, it’s a bit all over the place but should amuse kids. Another family dogfilm streaming on Amazon now is

Shepherd the Hero Dog. Set during the holocaust, it is more serious, but remains family-friendly. For grownups there is the superb A White, White Day (BFI) Hlynur Palmason’s atmospheric Icelandic story of grief, revenge and obsessive love. Very different is the filmed version of Hamilton, the award-winning musical (Disney+).

Recent cinema release catch-ups include Dark Waters, the engaging Mark Ruffalo in a fact-based story of a lawyer taking on a big chemical company. (BFI tomorrow, iTunes and Amazon), The True History of the Kelly Gang, a kind of steam punk version of the story that is worth a watch. IT: Chapter 2 (Now TV/

Sky July 10) isn’t quite as good as chapter one but is still a good film.

Older gems just landed on Amazon include Wilde, the 1997 biopic with Stephen Fry as Oscar, the wonderful 2009 drama, Mother and Child — Naomi Watts, Annette Bening and Samuel L Jackson in a story about adoption, and cult teen classic Cruel Intentions.

Netflix highlights are Kate and

Leo and Kathy Bates reunited in Revolutionary Road and Michael Douglas and Matt Damon in high camp in Behind the Candelabra,

worth it for Rob Lowe’s face alone. AINE O’CONNOR
