Brexit fears set to be raised at Dundalk conference

- BY OLIVIA RYAN Mairead McGuinness MEP.

As the UK referendum on membership of the EU draws closer, the impact a British exit - Brexit - would have on the border area here will be raised at a special conference in Dundalk this week.

The European Parliament Information Office in Ireland and the Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA) are jointly hosting the seminar on the upcoming referendum in Britain with regard to membership of the EU.

On June 23rd the UK electorate are set to go to the polls on question: ‘Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?’

With €1.2 billion worth of trade conducted every week between the UK and Ireland, and hundreds of thousands of Irish citizens living and working in the United Kingdom, and as it shares a land border with Northern Ireland, Ireland arguably has more at stake in this debate than any other EU Member State.

The seminar will analyse the political and social implications of the UK’s vote for Ireland, North and South, and will examine the potential impact on key sectors, including agriculture, trade and investment, and the all-island energy market.

Leading the seminar are Louth MEP Mairead McGuinness,, Matt Carthy, Sinn Féin, Member of the European Parliament, Dr. Anthony Soares, Director of the Centre for Cross Border Studies, Tom Arnold, Director General of the IIEA, Edgar Morgenroth, Research Professor at the ESRI

The event takes place this Friday June 10th from 10am to1pm in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Dundalk and is open to the public.

To register, please e-mail the IIEA at reception@iiea. com indicating that you wish to attend the UK SEMINAR or alternatively phone Lynn Fitzgerald at 01-8746756.
