CLOVR HILL

THE 3 Categories competition was played in sweltering heat but the scoring failed to soar to the expected heights as the fast pace all over the golf course held things in check.

The promise that he would visit the winner’s enclosure soon was fulfilled sooner rather than later by Attical’s finest Anthony Boden (18) who thought that his 41 points might be just short of the prizes.

Not so as a trio of 41 points saw Anthony top the countback from Shane O Neill (12) and Dermot Smyth (26) to take the overall winner’s prize. S

hane won the low section with Dermot edging out his brother Peter by a point to take top spot in Category 3. 39 points from Seamus Keenan (16) was good enough to win Section Two on the countback from Shane Toale (18) and Seamus McCoy (15) Next weekend is the June Monthly Medal.

The combined club classic between Cuchulainn GFC and Cloverhill GC which will be held on Saturday June 18 has a truly fabulous first prize on offer for this 4 person Scramble event. The Scramble which has G.U.I. and non-G.U.I. sections has already attracted huge interest with only a few time slots remaining. The main prize is a fourball with overnight accommodation at Druids Glen with a fourball for the following day for on Druids Heath included in the prize. There are three prizes in each section and burgers after hole 7 are sponsored by Café Brew, Dundalk. N.B because of demand there are a few Friday evening places available to be booked.

The Wednesday Cup this week off the front 9 white markers was a prelude to the Friday Open as Seamus McGivern was touched off on Wednesday night by Cathal Hughes on the countback after both returned 22 points but as one will see later in the notes Seamus was not to be denied the top podium finish. This week is off the Back 9 White Markers.

A great return to form saw Jim McDonnell (15) win a round of the Maratime Trophy with a return of 41 points to pip Fr Kevin Cullen (18) on the countback with Joe Hazzard (17) third a point behind with 40.

Club Treasurer Seamus McGivern and his wife Ann took time out late on Friday afternoon to play in the Friday Open competition. This proved to be a worthwhile venture for both as Seamus (20) took first prizemoney with 43 points as Ann (20) came third. Sandwiched in-between the husband and wife duo was the consistent Niall Owens (17) who was runner-up with 40 points. Connor McLaughlin (22) Mannan Castle was the leading visitor qualifier going through to the grand final in October with 36 points where he was joined by Kieran Grant (19) Ardee. Entry to the Friday Open is Visitors £12 /€15 Members £7/€9 (which includes 2’s money).
