THE death of Fiona Smyth, Manydown Close, Dundalk on June 17th, 2015 at the age of 45, caused widespread sympathy in her family and community.

She was the youngest in a family of nine children of Pat and Phyllis Garland from Cuchullain Terrace on the Castletown Road.

After attending Castletown Girls school and St. Vincent’s Secondary School, Fiona attended the DkIT, where she completed her education with a secretarial course.

Fiona started her working life with McVerry’s auctioneers, then Johnston, Lavery and McGahon Solicitors before joining the civil service where she worked in the Office of Public Works for the 22 years before her death.

After Fiona’s marriage to Paul Smyth in St. Patrick’s Cathedral on July 21st, 1995 her life took on a whole new meaning, sharing her life with Paul as they were devoted to each other.

They both shared many interests including walking, socialising and especially travelling, visiting many countries including America, Spain, and Poland just to name a few. They loved going on holiday with their close friends Paul and Bernie Mulholland.

A Saturday evening by the fire with Paul was the time that Fiona most cherished.

Her daily walk to work with her close sister, Áine was always a highlight for Fiona and they were often joined by another sister, Siobhan while meeting up with close friends, Siobhan, Marie, Jackie and Catherine was always a priority for Fiona.

She held her friends and colleagues at work in very high esteem, and was renowned for her charity work, especially for the blind.

Fiona had a great sense of fashion and loved shopping, and Christmas was always a special time for her, particularly her day out in Dublin with Paul when they soaked up the atmosphere.

She inherited her mother’s baking skills, and her nieces and nephews brought great joy and laughter into her life, as did her god child, Faye and her sister, Mia.

A beautiful and loving wife to Paul, she had the most infectious laugh and smile that could light up any room. Paul has been brokenhearted by Fiona’s sudden death and the void that she has left in his life and the lives of his family can never be replaced.

She is survived by Paul, sisters, Dorina, Linda, Siobhan and Aine, brothers, Jim and Aiden, nieces, Laura, Allison, and Nicola, nephews, Andrew and Peter, relatives and friends, including mother and father in-law, Anne and Hugh.
