Glenmore Challenge this Saturday
‘ The Glenmore Challenge’ takes place on this Saturday, June 11. This is the third year for the running of the event which is a 10 mile road race that takes in the beautiful scenery of Glenmore Valley and the Cooley Peninsula. In conjunction with the main event there is also a 5k trail/road route for walkers.
The event is professionally organised and marshalled by the Glenmore Athletic Club and once again a big turnout is expected. It is a beautiful scenic route taking in the whole valley, starting above Mullaghbuoy Community Centre at 11am, then down Castletowncooley and up through the various townlands from Benagh to the Longwoman’s Grave and back down to Glenmore.
Registration takes place in the Community Centre from 8.30am on the morning of the event and this can also be done on line for the runners and walkers. There is a great interest in the Peninsula among local runners but stiff opposition can be expected from last year’s medal winners from both North & South.
The 5k road and mountain trail starts just after the runners take off. This gets underway from the Community Centre. All those who register for the walk at €10 and for the run will receive an unique wooden medal. Families are encouraged to come along for this event. The route takes in approximately 2k on the road and then a lovely incline to the mountain with breath taking views of the Peninsula before returning to the road. Runners and walkers will finish back at the Community Centre for after race refreshments.
The new sponsor of the event is Greenore Port and the support of these together with the previous years’ sponsor, Carton Die Limited, are greatly welcomed and much appreciated.
Glenmore Athletic Club welcomes all to come along and support this lovely occasion. The Maria Gorretti Respite Centre at Lordship is one of the benefactors.
