Appeal over hit and run that claimed life of Fintan (20)
Gardai in County Monaghan have issued an appeal across the North East seeking information about a hit and run that claimed the life of a 20-year-old from Castleblayney as the fifth anniversary of the killing approaches.
In the early hours of Sunday June 26 2011, Fintan Treanor was walking home after a night out in Castleblaney. At Lemgare, Clontibret, Co. Monaghan he was struck by a vehicle and fatally injured.
The Lemgare Road is a quiet country road, little used by traffic and it links the villages of Clontibret and Annyalla to Derrynoose and Keady.
A spokesperson for Monaghan Gardai said they were hoping for a breakthrough in the case and hope that readers in Dundalk and the border area who may know something will come forward to help solve the case once and for all.
The spokesperson said: ‘ This is the fifth anniversary of Fintan’s death. Gardai in Monaghan have made appeals over the last five years for information about this fatal hit and run accident.
‘ These appeals have centred on an old model Audi A4 1995 to 2001 model missing the front lower air-vent grille.
‘Five years have passed and the driver of the car involved has not been located.
‘Perhaps now after five years someone knows a person who disposed of an Audi A4 around that time.
‘In the past five years, loyalties, friendships and relationships change and perhaps someone that felt unable to come forward before is now in a position to provide the investigation team with the vital information that would locate the driver’.
CrimeStoppers have offered a reward for information identifying the driver. This appeal will also feature on the Crimecall programme to be broadcast on Monday next, June 27. Anyone with any information please contact Monaghan Garda station at 047 77200.
