Councillor paints bleak picture of estate

- Cllr Kevin Meenan has described a worsening social and public order problem in Doolargy Avenue.

Daily attacks on gardai, assaults on neighbours and a stand-off between youths and the armed response unit - everyday life in Doolargy Avenue, as detailed by a local public representa­tive.

Speaking at Monday’s meeting of Louth county council, Cllr Kevin Meenan said the situation has gotten worse in the Dundalk estate since he raised the matter at municipal district level two weeks ago.

He said there are all-day and all-night parties, and some owner-occupiers are selling up.

While there are 120 houses in total, only between three and five are responsibl­e for the trouble.

‘Criminals are renting out houses, and we are losing control. It will soon become a Moyross (the notorious council estate in Limerick).

‘ These people are not the Kinahans or Hutchs. They could be easily dealt with.’

Cllr Meenan said he is not criticisin­g the guards or the council. They need to get together immediatel­y.

‘ The fear is the area will have to be demolished.’

Director of service, Joe McGuinness said he wants to assure the good ten- ants of Doolargy Avenue that on your side.’

He added the council is aware of the seriousnes­s of what’s alleged, and is investigat­ing it.
