Unveiling ceremonies in park

-

There was a beautiful event in the park last Sunday, to unveil a sign showing all the names of those who sponsored the avenue of trees in the park.

A plaque was also unveiled for Rosa Lysaght which has been placed in her memory at the sensory garden in the park. Rose was very actively involved in the early development of the park and was an influential figure in the lives of generations of young local folk, with running her own pre-school

The sun shone on the large gathering of friends and families in attendance and Fr. Brian White gave a lovely speech and blessed both the sign and the plaque. The event was followed by teas and coffees served in the park, with the sun encouraging people to stay and mingle.

‘Events like these are what the park is all about’ said Karen Coan, Park committee chairwoman. ‘ The fantastic sense of community that built and maintains the park, was present on Sunday as it always is when we host events in the park’.

Karen also gave huge thanks to the hard working park committee and gardening club and in particular told of how Ann Fennelly, Richard Martin, Eileen Carter, Ronnie McNeill, Damien McGuinness, Donal Matthews and John McCormack spent the vital first year in the life of the trees planted on the avenue, watering each tree with a wheelie bin full of water every week which was a massive undertaking.

Karen also thanked Paul Martin Landscape Design, Louth County Council, John Douglas Nurseries and the community of Blackrock for all their support in developing a wonderful parkland amenity in the heart of the village. ‘ The trees will continue to grow and over the years become a wonderful feature in the park’ Karen concluded.

If anyone would like to get involved in the Tuesday morning gardening club, please pop down to the park any Tuesday at 11am. Everyone is welcome.
