St Peter’s trio make hay in the field events at Tullamore

GABRIEL Bell was St Peter’s AC’s star of the show as he captured three medals over two days at the weekend’s Leinster Juvenile Track and Field Championsh­ips in Tullamore.

On Saturday Katie Murphy was in action in the shot putt event and again this fine young athlete performed well on the big stage, throwing 11.26m to win the silver medal in the Under-16 age category. Morgan Quigley was also in action and performed well in his first Leinster Championsh­ip for the club.

Gabriel Bell, who is once again enjoying a fantastic season, began his weekend with a massive leap in the Long jump of 6.09m to win gold in the Under-16 category. However, he is not just a field athlete and duly dusted the sand off his spikes and won silver in the 200m sprint.

The on Sunday in terrible condtions he was also in action in the high jump. In a raindrench­ed arena he managed to jump 1.60m to win silver and collect his third medal of the championsh­ips.

Martin McGrane was also in action in the Under-19 shot putt competitio­n and got among the medals as his throw of 9.36m secured third place and a provincial bronze.

The previous weekend the club had five athletes representi­ng Louth in the first round of the National League in Santry. Conor Durnin won the triple jump with 12.70m and took part in the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams which finished second.

Mark Rogers was second in the pole vault with 2.40m, third in the 110m hurdles and fourth in the high jump with 1.80m. Emily Rogers jumped 1.65m in the high jump to finish second and threw a PB of 19.14 in the hammer to finish fourth in that event.

Martin McGrane finished second in the shot with 8.73m and fourth in the heavier weight competitio­n of 56lb, throwing 3.81m. Tom McGrane was second in the hammer with a throw of 17.14m and took fourth position in the discus.
