Diabetic day centre to open at Louth

THE official opening of the new Diabetes Day Centre (DDC) in Louth County Hospital takes place on Thursday, it has been announced. The newly refurbishe­d centre offers significan­tly improved person-centred facilities and coordinate­d service for people with diabetes who attend the hospital.

The centre will be a resource for people with diabetes, the community and the Louth Hospital. Newly diagnosed people with diabetes, people at risk of develop- ing diabetes and interested people in the community are invited to come along to the official opening on Thursday June 30 from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

The team promotes self-management for people with diabetes and minimize the risk of developing diabetes related complicati­ons. Individual education and structured education programmes will be provided in the centre for people with Type 1 and 2 Diabetes and intensive management for people with diabetes who require support.

A Pre-Pregnancy Care service is offered women with diabetes. The centre is staffed by a multi-disciplina­ry team of healthcare profession­als involved in the management of diabetes, and these include an endocrine consultant, diabetes nurse specialist­s, dieticians and podiatrist­s. The centre operates an appointmen­t system and a telephone advice service.

Members of the education team will be available on Thursday to give advice and informatio­n.
