A 23-year-old man has been sent forward for trial at the circuit court on a drugs charge.

Peter Heffernan, 5 Cois Cormac, Saltown, is charged with possession of cannabis for sale or supply at Tateetra on October 24 2015. He was sent forward for trial on October 4 on bail in his own bond of €1000 and was granted legal aid for two barristers. Lane on August 4 2014 and dangerous driving at Bridge Street on May 2 last year.

The court previously heard how Gardai came across a BMW driven by Markey and followed it to the forecourt of a garage where the defendant got out, saw the Gardai and got straight back into the car again.

He drove off at high speed on the Castletown Road and went around a roundabout the wrong way. There were no cars coming and he was charged with three counts of dangerous driving.

On August 4 2014, Gardai were close to the Imperial Hotel when they saw Markey being told by staff to leave the area, but he refused. Gardai asked him to step outside where Markey, who was drunk, ‘began shouting obscenities and was abusive’. He was ‘not very pleasant to Gardai and told one of them; ‘I know you boy. You work in Dromad. You should know me, I know you boy’.

The case had been adjourned for a probation report and solicitor Paula Tiernan said it put Markey ‘at the lower end of the moderate risk of re-offending’. The offences fate back more than a year and he has not come to the authorities’ attention since.

She said Markey had been socialising in Dundalk around that time but ‘that’s no longer the case’.

He was fined €100 for careless driving and €100 for being abusive.
