- Charles Dullaghan 1920 - 2016 The late Charles Dullaghan

CHARLES (Charlie) Dullaghan, Upper Merches, Hoey’s Lane, Dublin Road, Dundalk died peacefully at his home on May 2nd, surrounded by his family.

Charlie was predeceased by his beloved wife, Theresa in 2010, his eldest son, Patrick in 1992, son-in-law, Eddie McMahon in 2000 ( both in USA), parents, Patrick and Mary and five of his siblings.

He was the eldest of eight children and was brought up in Jenkinstown.

His first employment was in Rawsons Shoe Factory where he spent several years in the ‘clicking room’ and was nicknamed ‘Chang’ as there were so many others named Charlie in the factory.

Charlie rode his bicycle from Jenkinstown to and form work along the Greenore railway line to the Quay and down to Rawsons where the Aiken Barracks are now located.

Later Charlie worked in building and was involved in the building of the Louth County Hospital where he secured work as a boiler man in the newly opened hospital in the early 1960’s.

Charlie retired in 1980 and with his wife, Theresa enjoyed 30 years of retirement, travelling to visit family, five of whom emigrated to USA.

Charlie met Theresa 77 years ago at the local variety shows in which they both acted and sang. Her death in 2010 after almost 68 years of marriage was devastating to him and his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and enjoyed having his home filled with music, song and laughter.

His love of reading, particularly world history brought him great joy, especially if someone challenged his knowledge on the subject.

Charlie celebrated his 96th birthday in March at home with his family, and his death even at such an advanced age has left a void in the lives of his family and all who knew him.

He is survived by his devoted children, John, Bernadine Dullaghan-Finn and Jimmy ( Washington DC), Pauline McMahon (California), Briege Waite, Kate McEnteggart, Terry Dullaghan and Jean Dullaghan (all Dundalk), sisters, Tina Burke (UK), Doreen and brother-in-law, John Byrne (Dundalk), 25 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren, sons-in-law, Bobby, Tommy, Ciaran, and Jarlath, daughtersin-law, Camille, JoAnn, Lillie and Alma.

Having reposed at his home, Charlie’s remains were taken to St. Patrick’s Cathedral where Requiem Mass was celebrated by Rev. Desmond Branigan, C.C., assisted by Rev. Paddy Stanley, SM., CC., Holy Family.

The Readings were given by daughter, Pauline and son, John and the Prayers of the Faithful were led by sons, Terry and Jimmy.

The Offertory Gifts were presented by daughters, Briege Waite and Jean Dullaghan and the beautiful singing was provided by soloist, Deirdre Morgan accompanied by Brendan McCourt.

Following Mass burial took place in St. Patrick’s cemetery and the large attendance of family and friends reflected the high regard by which Charliewas held.

Month’s Mind Mass was held in St. Patrick’s Cathedral on June 5th.
