Oriel a sell-out for CL match

- by FRANCIS CARROLL

A sell-out crowd is expected at Oriel Park on Wednesday night as Dundalk embark on another Champions League adventure.

Icelandic title-holders FH Hafnarfjordur are in town for a 7.45pm kick-off, and the advice to supporters is get there early!

‘ The capacity is the same as always for Europe, around 3,400,’ explained Dundalk FC general manager, Martin Connolly.

‘We have to provide seats, and there is no standing behind the goals. There are still a few tickets left, but I expect them to go,’ he added this morning (Tuesday).

After the national side’s memorable performances at Euro 2016, culminating in a last 16 defeat of England, football is on a high in Iceland, although Martin is not anticipating too many visitors for this fixture.

‘Depending on who you talk to, the number is between 10 and fifteen.’

Nevertheless, FH are sure to be buoyed by events in France.

‘Our own Gerry Spain who was in Iceland, said you could sense the atmosphere, and it reminded him of Italia 90.’

Martin continued the second qualifying round fixture is a 50-50 game, and therefore a great opportunity for one of the teams.

Bookmakers make Dundalk favourites at a shade of odds-on to win the first leg, going 5/6, while it’s 5/2 a draw, and 7/2 HF.

‘Stephen Kenny (Dundalk manager) has emphasised the need for plenty of vocal support, and for fans to arrive early (gates open 6.30pm) to get an atmosphere going.’

On that note, Martin is urging fans to adhere to the matchday arrangements for entry to the ground, which are slightly different than normal.

The main change will be for supporters with tickets for the Shed. They should go down the Carrick Road-end laneway, and walk behind the goals.

All other ticket holders can gain access via the main entry point to Oriel Park.

The area behind the town end goal will be completely closed off for the night.

All bars will be closed before the match and at half-time. The bars will open at the end of the game.
