nor made amends for a glaring miss when he slid the ball wide all alone in front of goal from a low cross by Sean Matthews, and another when he overran the ball and goalkeeper Roe advanced to dive low and collect the ball at his feet.

The winger sped past two defenders in the Doolargy box and squared the ball to substitute Vinny Smith, completely on his own, to tap into the open net.

It looked plain sailing now into the semi-final for Quay, but it turned into a nerve wracking finale for them. In the final minute Ciaran Boland grazed the top of the Quay bar when he volleyed keeper’s Kevin Mullen’s punched clearance from the edge of the 18-yard box.

Seconds later substitute Jamie Lally came to his side’s rescue as he kicked off the goal line, and Doolargy ratcheted up the pressure and tension as the tie entered four minutes stoppage time.

As well as the dismissal of Gavigan, Quay - with all their subs on - also had full-back Gavin Toner hobbling as he suffered an injury in the closing minutes, and they exhaled a mighty gasp of relief just before the final whistle.

Doolargy worked a short corner to send Lee Kavanagh racing into the Quay penalty box to unleash a powerful shot that deflected off a defender and Mullen looked beaten only to strike the crossbar.
