MEDALS for Sean Allen and Dean Murtagh were the highlight for St Peter’s AC at the weekend as they competed in Saturday’s National B Championships.

This is an event for athletes who hadn’t qualified for the National Championships from their provinces and the Dromiskin club had six athletes competing.

Dean Murtagh had a great performance in the shot putt with a throw of 6.46m which was very good as the competition took place during a monsoon-like downpour. His efforts were good enough to land the bronze medal.

Sean Allen, better known for his running, had a good performance in the Under-12 high jump when he won gold with a jump of 1.21m. Julie Mc Loughlin leaped to a new PB in the long jump of 3.75m and Cian Loy had a good run in the 60m sprint, just missing out on a place in the final.

Lucy Smith had a brave run in her 60m sprint and Rory McLoughlin made a return to the 600m distance with a sub1:50 time following injury.

Then on Sunday St Peter’s AC had five athletes competing at the National Juvenile Track & Field Championships at Tullamore. Three of these were competing in the U-12 age group and Niamh Brady and Judith Bell took part in the high jump.

These fine athletes have worked hard at this event since the indoor season and their hard work was clearly evident as both made great improvements, with Niamh jumping 1.25m and Judith 1.20. Unfortunately both missed out narrowly on medals, but they performed very well nevertheless.

Ronan Deerey took his place in the Under-12 shot putt, having qualified from his recent bronze medal win at the Leinster Championships. Ronan put in a good
