Finnegan fires combo to league glory

-

CAITLIN Finnegan’s late goal proved decisive as Glyde Rangers/Westerns snatched a 4-5 to 1-10 victory from the jaws of defeat in a thrilling Division 1 League Final at Philipstown.

This was actually a replay as the sides had finished level seven days earlier, and it was another ding-dong battle between the combination team’s 17-strong panel and the considerably larger Geraldines squad. Indeed, two girls - Rebecca Watters and Emily Scriv- en - showed their dedication by returning home from the Ranafast Gaeltacht to boost the Glyde/ Westerns numbers. The mid Louth girls looked to be in the driving seat at the half-way point as they led by six points, but Geraldines fought back strongly to draw level, with most of those scores coming from frees.

Glyde/Westerns were not to be denied, though, and Finnegan’s goal swung the match back decisively in her side’s favour - sweet revenge for the combination team who lost twice to Geraldines in the league earlier in the season.

Glyde/Westerns would like to thank the players, mentors and parents for their commitment, while another chapter in these sides’ great rivalry will be written this week when they are due to face each other in the first round of the championship.
