CLOVERHILL

-

USING all the experienced gained from being involved in the third nine on Captains Day Gerard Loye (21) swooped for his first Cloverhill success by capturing the 3 T’s club qualifier. The National suicide awareness competition hosts it’s final at the K-club between all the regional qualifiers. Played in windy conditions the homeward 9 was proving the more difficult than the outward 9 with the winners card a case in point. 24 points on the opening 9 from Gerard was followed by 19 for a total of 43 pts which left him a comfortable winner on the day. Young Lorcan Rafferty (18) finished runner-up with 40 pts with his 21 on the back 9 enough to beat Vice-captain Seamus McParland (11) who also had 40 pts. Gerard will join our Lady Captain Sylvia Boyle, a club professional in the qualifier at the Slieve Russell on Monday September 26 to try and win a place in the final on the Palmer Course (K-Club) on Oct 3. Next weekend will see the August Medal being played for. THE Back 9 White markers competition may have gotten off to a pointless start for Dee McEvoy but a birdie on hole 11 followed by another at hole 17 brought him back to an even keel of 3 points a hole for a winning total of 24 points to qualify for the 18 hole Wednesday Cup Final in September.

A round of Golfer of the Year was played last Thursday with Fr Kevin Cullen taking top spot on the countback from Gerry McShane after both finished with 41 points. Frank Quinn was third with 39 points. A round of the Maritime Trophy will be played this week.

The two visitor places in the Grand Final on Friday October 28 were won by Paul Whitten (12) who had 39 pts and Stephen English (13) who returned 38 pts.
