Kind-hearted Lilywhite gave ticket to Mayo man stranded at Dublin Stadium

-

IN the maelstrom of excitement and drama around Dundalk’s clash with Legia Warsaw last week, one story of generosity stood out after a kind-hearted Dundalk FC fan handed over a ticket to a stranded student from Mayo who had travelled to see the Lilywhites at the Dublin Stadium but found himself unable to gain admission.

DCU student Darragh Quinn told the Argus how he had been at the Dublin college earlier in the day doing exams and had arranged with his uncle Mark, a Galway United fan, to meet up outside the stadium to collect his ticket. But Darragh found himself on the opposite side of the stadium as the game was about to kick off and, to compound the situation, his phone broke down thanks to the pouring rain.

Darragh, who is from Ballina, said: ‘We were to meet up at a certain place and I ended up on the opposite side of the stadium where they were. My uncle had the ticket but didn’t know where I was as my phone had broken down. I ended up on the correct street, about half an hour into the game.

‘Instead of giving up and going home, I went to buy a ticket from the Ticketmaster van and asked if they took cards as I had no cash on me. The guy said they didn’t take cards and I walked away. I was cross- ing the bridge at the stadium and heading away when a young woman came over to me and said: ‘Did you not get a ticket?’

‘When I told her what happened, about four other people she was with came over and started talking to me and said they wouldn’t see me stuck and gave me a ticket for the game and I joined them in the stadium’.

When Darragh told his uncle about what happened, Mark took to the Dundalk FC Supporters’ Club page on Facebook to post his, and his nephew’s, thanks. He wrote: ‘ This message may not make it to them but I want to thank them and Dundalk fans for this generous kind gesture and also to the many fans who shook our hands and thanked us for coming last night. What a great night out for the LOI family last night! Thank you’.

And within a short space of time, Kate Wynne, a student at Trinity College from Knockbridge, had identified herself as the kind-hearted fan who saved Darragh’s night and got in touch with him on Facebook.

Darragh said he was really grateful for the gesture last week and added that many of his college friends are from Dundalk and he has travelled to see the Lilywhites play against Bohemians and Shelbourne.
