THE Cara Cancer Support Centre is raising funds for a new home which will allow it to offer a wider range of services for those affected by cancer and to extend its opening hours.

The centre, which is run on a voluntary basis, is holding a family race day at Dundalk Stadium on Sunday September 4.

Founded by a group of survivors and those whose families were touched by cancer, the Cara Cancer Centre opened its doors in Williamson’s Place in May 2014.

It was set up to help and support cancer patients and their families in Dundalk and outlying areas and is greatly appreciated by those who have just been diagnosed or are living with the disease.

As well as operating as a dropin centre, where people can go in for a chat over a cup of tea, to get information and to meet others in the same situation, the centre offers a range of therapies including tai chi, qi energy, crochet classes, natural healing, workshops with Master Hyun and Master Su, mindfulness, angel healing, counselling by appointment and reflexology by appointment.

For women diagnosed with breast cancer, the centre hosts pamper days in association with Boots and Moira’s Hair Salon, and is affiliated with Joyceln Pharmacy for prosthesis and bra fitting and with Wigworks for wig fitting, meaning that women can avail of these services in their home town.

Irish Cancer Society information booklets on different cancers and treatments, a guide to services for cancer patients in Co Louth, as well as details of social welfare entitlements, are available at the centre,

Last year, saw 1,800 visits to the centre by people being treated for cancer and family members.

Race Day Tickets, €30 per family, €15 for adults and €50 for corporate seating, are available from the Cara Cancer Support Centre, tel 042 9339383 or email cararaceday@gmail.com
