Peninsula Cup firmly rooted in pre-season calendar

THIS weekend saw the hosting of the 4th annual Peninsula Cup pre-season soccer tournament at Bellurgan United. In glorious sunshine over the Saturday and Sunday 32 teams competed in 4 age groups, u11, 12, 13 and 14.

The tournament kicked off on Saturday the 27th with Park Villa Navan, Bellurgan United, Cliftonvil­le FC, Glenmuir, Warrenpoin­t Town, Wayside Celtic all competing in the under 11 and under 13’s. In the u11 final a very keenly contested final saw Malahide overcome Cliftonvil­le FC 3 – 2 and in the under 13 final Malahide United were victorious over Park Villa of Navan.

Sunday saw the under 12’s and under 14’s compete for silverware. Teams competing included the following Lourdes Celtic, Malahide United, Bellurgan, Ridgeway Rovers, Walshestow­n, Dundalk Developmen­t Squads, Belvedere and Warrenpoin­t. Belvedere were the winners over Duleek in the u12 competitio­n while Malahide got the better of Lourdes Celtic in the under 14 final.

Player of the tournament and fair play awards were also awarded within each age group as voted by the matchday ref- erees. Bellurgan United would like to thank KTF Timberfram­e as the main sponsor of the tournament and also to the army of club volunteers who helped out in getting the club facilities and pitches into immaculate condition and also to everyone who helped serving refreshmen­ts over the weekend.

Not only was the football on view of a very high standard but with the great weather the Cooley Peninsula never looked better.

Plans are underway for next year’s event with the tournament going for its 5th year and going from strength to strength.’
