CLOVERHILL

IT was certainly a case of ‘the early bird’ getting the worm when it came to the winner of the weekend v Par competition. First man on the tee David McEvoy (15) certainly produced a clubhouse target to be met when he finished his round 8 up. Try as the rest of the field did it was Raymond Quinn (18) who came closest with 7 up to take the runner-up spot. Club Captain Declan O Neill (17) took third place on the countback from Pearse Murphy (10), Craig Pearce (25), Colin McParland (10) and Paddy Malone (9) after all finished on 5 up. Next weekend sees play for the penultimate of the Medal competitions. ONLY 4 weeks of qualifying left for securing your place in the 18 hole Wednesday Cup final which will take place on Sunday October 21. With 23pts off the Back 9 White markers Gerard Loye is the latest Wednesday winner to join Craig Pearce, Anthony O Hare, Benny Tierney, Dee McEvoy, Paul Kelly, Raymond Kelly, Seamus Keenan, Pearse Murphy, Cathal Hughes, Noel McParland, Raymond Quinn and James Coburn in the final. Front 9 Green markers in play this week. HAVING come close on a number of occasions throughout the year hard working Seniors boss Brendan Brown finally made the winners enclosure. Brendan returned 40 points in a round of Golfer of the Year to finish a point ahead of Raymond Kelly who relegated Fr Cullen to third place on the countback. A round of the Maratime Trophy will be held next week. FOR the second week in a row it was visitors who dominated the Friday Open as they filled the three podium places. Brian Carroll (18) was the overall winner with 42 points one better than Rob Stuart (16) with both booking their places in the October final for the chance to win the weekend away fourball with accommodation. Mick Ryan (18) was the unlucky visitor to miss out on a place in the final but has the consolation of third placed prizemoney after returning 38 points. Friday Open Members £7 Visitors £12 which includes 2’s. THE club will be using our neighbours Mullaghbawn GFC clubhouse for a fundraising venture on Friday September 23. Newry born and bred actor Kieran Cunningham will be paying an affectionate homage to Ireland’s first alternative comedian Dave Allen who is widely recognised as the ‘chair man’ of Irish comedy. Kieran will present his show AT LARGE-Dave Allen-A journey through life at 8 pm sharp on the Friday night where admission is by ticket only currently on sale £10 each. Only a handful of tickets remaining and can be had by contacting either the football or golf.

DUNDALK

CAPTAIN Maurice Soraghan and Lady Captain Jean Connolly have led the congratulations to the club’s Newsam Cup team who beat Knightsbrook in last Saturday’s Final at Royal Tara. They have paid tribute to team managers Peter McCaughey and Edmund Sheridan as well as the 15 members of the panel for their dedication and effort over the past few months to ensure the trophy returned to Dundalk for the first time since 2008.

The first round of the Club Championship took place on Sunday and defending champion Caolan Rafferty leads the field by four shots into next Saturday’s final round. Robert White, Eddie Rogers and Aaron Grant all shot one over par 73s and leading the

A total of 56 pairs played Scotch Foursomes over either 18 or nine holes, depending the category of the younger player, and the scoring showed that there is plenty of talent coming through the juvenile ranks.

Another is Áine Greenan (26) who joined up with Paul Campbell (12) to take Category 2 with a one under par 71 while Ferghal Duffy (16) and Barra Duffy (36) won Category 3 with a 63 and Category 4 saw Joe Durnin (17) and Emma Durnin (36) come out on top with a fabulous nett score of 58½.
