Stole Gucci perfume, body lotion from pharmacy

- GUILTY. . Gucci perfume stolen

A man who stole hundreds of euro worth of Gucci-branded perfume and body lotion from a Dundalk chemist was found hiding in a bush a distance away, the district court heard last week.

Tomas Kancierius, (26), Knockaconny, Monaghan, admitted the theft offences which arose out of an incident at Byrne’s Pharmacy on August 9.

Staff reported that two men walked into the shop and lifted four Gucci perfumes and four of the same branded perfumes worth a total of €640.

The incident was captured on CCTV and two men were, Gardai said, ‘found hiding nearby in a bush’ at Fr Murray Park with a bag containing the designer items.

Kancerious has 17 previous convictions, including for theft and driving offences.

Barrister Irene Sands said all the good were recovered and were resalable. Ms Sands said her client was one of two men involved and was not acting alone. Kancerious is from Lithuania and has been living in Ireland for eight years, Ms Sands said.

He had been working in the mushroom industry but lost his employment and is ‘completely reliant’ on his sister who works in the same industry.

Kancerious has been in custody for the past month, having been arrested on August 9, and Ms Sands said her client had already served four weeks for the offence.

Judge Flann Brennan said that although the goods were recovered and were resalable, and although Kancerious has been on remand for a month, he ‘nonetheless has an appalling record’.

The judge imposed a two month sentence, to run from last Wednesday, September 7. But he fixed recognaissance in the event of an appeal against the severity of the sentence in the defendant’s own bond of €500.
