Costly night for Quay as Trim nab victory

-

QUAY 2 TRIM CELTIC 3

IT was bad night for Quay as they relinquished their 100% record, suffered two bad injuries and had a player sent off at Clancy Park in a highly disappointing finale to this top of the table clash on Friday night.

They stand to be without Sean Matthews and Cody Magill for some time as they sustained apparently serious injuries which resulted in the former retiring after half an hour and the latter being taken away by ambulance which held up the start of the second half after he was feared to have broken his leg right on the stroke of half time.

They will also be missing the influential Martin Smith for their next game as in the closing seconds he collected two yellow cards.

The cup holders had been reduced to ten players some time beforehand which helped Quay to recover from a two goal deficit, conceded within an eight minute period in the first half, and shake off the loss of their two injured players.

Ace scorer Derek Donohoe scored a cracking goal in the 21st minute and Eoin O’Connor just short of the half hour.

Quay’s Matthews almost immediately hobbled off but they gained a lifeline when Eibhin Caldwell turned sharply in the visitors penalty box and fired low into the corner of net eight minutes from the break.

He went close to equalising as he found himself on the end of a brilliantly worked move from a free inside his own half to strike the side netting and post.

Then Magill went down close to his own corner flag and wasn’t moved as the referee blew early for the interval. An ambulance crew was called and attended to him before the second-half could start.

Quay equalised through Colin Finan following a well worked short corner, but failed to press home their advantage of the extra man.

With Trim looking the more dangerous in the closing stages Colm O’Reilly provided a real bonus by nabbing the winner.

Quay were further dejected by the dismissal of Smith, amid a flurry of late yellow cards. QUAY: Quay: John Rogers, Sean Matthews (David Redmond), Dean Sheils, Robbie Gavigan, Stefan McKevitt, Cody Magill (Johnny Winters 45). Andrew Duffy, Martin Smith, Denis Cholach, Eibhin Caldwell, Colin Finan. Other subs Michael McDonnell/Sheils; Johnny Lynch/ Duffy and Adam McKenna/Finan.
