Webb winner keeps physical Rathmullen challenge at Bay

-

BAY 2 RATHMULLEN 1

AFTER last season’s game against their opponents who received eight yellow and three red cards, Bay knew to expect a physical encounter on Sunday in the third division of the NE League.

They weren’t disappointed either as Rathmullen applied most of the early pressure and on 16 minutes went ahead through their winger.

For the next 20 minutes a lot of the play was in midfield with neither team creating goalscoring opportunities.

Then eight minutes before the break Neven Novosel broke from midfield and slotted Mario Kolak through for the equaliser.

Rathmullen came back and just before the interval whistle forced Kevin Mullen into a fine one handed save from a free kick, which he turned around the post.

It only took two minutes of the second half for Bay to take the lead. A free kick was fired into the box by Neven Novosel and Anton Webb met it with a glorious header into the corner to make it three goals in two games for himself.

With 20 minutes to go the game turned ugly with numerous Rathmullen players receiving yellow cards and five minutes before the end an off-the-ball kick on Mario Kolak saw Rathmullen reduced to ten men.

Still they piled forward in search of an equalizer but the home defence and keeper Mullen stood strong to see out the game and claim a valuable three points. BAY: Kevin Mullen, Robbie Rafferty, Stephen McGuinness, Robbie O’Hanlon, Derek Ruddy, Joe Woods (Robbie Murphy 25), Daniel Berry (Damien Bailey 70), Marcel Ekwueme, Neven Novosel (Josh Larkin 55), Mario Kolak, Anton Webb.
