Devoted family man Michael was sociable and outgoing and had a wide circle of friends

- MICHAEL FAUGHEY 1929 - 2016

MICHAEL Oliver Faughey, 86, passed away on 30 July, 2016 at his home, Corlatt House, Demesne Road, Dundalk, Co. Louth.

Michael was born the eldest of four on October 3, 1929, to the late Bernard (Barnie) and Mary Faughey, Donaghmore, Carrick Road, Dundalk.

Michael grew up on the family farm and was a great man with his hands, liking to figure out and fix things, so it was no surprise when in the early 1950s he trained as a fitter on the Great Northern Railways.

In 1956, Michael met his future wife, Maud Crowley who was from Carlow. Maud was teaching in Dundalk at the time. In 1958, they both travelled to Rhodesia and were married there.

In Rhodesia, Michael worked on the Rhodesian Railways and Maud worked as a primary school teacher. They were blessed with four children and travelled extensively throughout Africa. In later years, Michael loved to tell stories and show photographs from his African adventures. In 1970, after 12 years in Africa, Michael returned to Dundalk with his family and he and Maud had two more children.

In the early 1970’s, he worked briefly for CIE before opening a grocery shop at Corlatt House, were he lived until his death.

Michael was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Home and family were extremely important to him He was ahead of his time, loving to cook and looking after his children at home when Maud went out to teach in Bellurgan National School.

He truly loved his family, in turn was loved by them and his wider family circle. He is sorely missed by all of his family. Michael had a great sense of humour and enjoyed meeting up with friends and family for a chat and some ‘craic’.

Sociable and out-going, he was a friend to all, irrespective of background or creed.

Michael loved to dance. He and Maud would attend dances and spend hours dancing to swing, jazz and big band music.

Michael is survived by his wife, Maud; children, Bernard (Marie), Michael (Breda), Claire, John (Tammy), Deirdre (Michael), and Declan (Bernadette); 8 grandchildren, Grainne, Claire, Sean, Stephen, Niamh, Niall, Eva and Thomas; sister, Anna; brother, Joe; cousins, nieces and nephews. His parents and brother Brian predeceased him.

The funeral service was held on 4 August, 2016 in Kilkerley Church with burial in the adjoining graveyard. Michael’s Months Mind Mass will be held on Saturday, 17 September, 2016 at 6pm in Kilkerley Church.
