Greenfield on top in Muirhevna

-

On a blustery Sunday morning last years champions, Greenfield, took on Heynestown in Muirheavna Mor.

Although dry the windy conditions didn’t help either team as any loose pass went straight into touch. Heynestown with the skilful and energetic pair of Ronan and Mark Molloy battled superbly to contain any Greenfield offensive play. Along with ex- Greenfield player, Ollie Carroll, they had bundles of energy for the counter attacking policy employed by manager Joe Breen. Greenfield had more of the ball but limited chances.

The deadlock was broken from a corner as Greenfield centre half Ciaran Fox rose highest from a corner kick to settle Greenfield’s nerves. But Heynestown are a different kettle of fish this season and battled back to draw level from a well worked counter attack and levelled through the impressive Molloy. So level at half time and all to play for as second half kicked off.

Greenfield started to get a grip on midfield through the calm but skilful Joe Needham. He dragged others around him into a more direct footballing style of play. Along with Gavin Dullaghan and Colin Farrell, Greenfield passed through Heynestown, dissecting them with little triangles only for the end pass to release the pacy Chris Mullan and the end product on two occasions was the ball ending up in Heynestown net.

Mullan got his hat trick via a penalty after keeper Cathal O’Brien pushed Colin Farrell who rounded him after a mazy run and was about to finish. And after all the effort Heynestown exerted in the first half they hadn’t got the energy left to mount a comeback and the game fizzled out and came to an end with Greenfield having the majority of possession. But on this performance with some off the players back that were missing this week, Heynestown will cause problems for any team in the league.

The final score on a thoroughly good game of football was 4-1 to Greenfield.

Other games: The inclement weather halted the staging of a number of matches last weekend. Ramparts had a 3-2 victory over Faughart while Glen United recorded a 1-0 win over Castletown. The match was played at Castletown and a Philip Martin goal clinched it for Glen. Carlingford/ Ravensdale and Edentubber/ Setanta were called off.

The fixtures for this coming weekend are as follows; Ramparts v Greenfield; Faughart v Carlingford; Ravensdale v Heynestown; Castletown v Edentubber; Glen v Setanta
