Drugs taskforce call after garda raids
DUNDALK GARDA DRUGS UNIT TARGET LOCAL PROPERTIES IN SERIES OF RAIDS
A series of drugs raids in the Dundalk area over the last week have led to calls for an anti-drugs taskforce to be set up in town.
The garda drugs unit led a series of planned searches across town including Muirhevnamor, Newry Road and Quay Street.
The raids led to the discovery of a large quantity of cannabis plants, and in Muirhevnamor an undisclosed sum of cash was uncovered.
A garda spokesman said the individual searches were part of an ongoing operation tackling the illegal cultivation and the sale or supply of drugs.
Responding to the raids Louth TD Gerry Adams said that ‘additional resources must be allocated to the Gardaí in Dundalk to properly address the sale and supply of drugs in the town.’
‘Gardaí raided a number of properties in Dundalk during the week in connection with criminal drugs gangs
‘I welcome the fact that the local Gardaí are proactive on this issue and I acknowledge their efforts.
However local communities in Dundalk are concerned that one off operations have limited effect. There must be a multi agency approach and a special anti drugs task force must be established in Dundalk.’
Ω Meanwhile, Dundalk gardai are appealing for anyone who witnessed a ‘ hit and run’ incident along the Castletown Road on Sunday morning to contact them. At around 10.30am a person was crossing at a designated crossing along the road, when a black Mercedes car, with a reported registration 07-D- 42097 rear-ended a car which had stopped at the crossing. A number of people were taken to hospital. The Mercedes then reversed and left the scene. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the confidential line on 1800 666111.
Ω Two garda vehicles were reportedly rammed last night (Monday) in Cooley as they attempted to stop a stolen car. The incident was one of a number of burglaries which gardai responded to in north Louth during the day.
