BROADHURSTS BID TO BE IRELAND’S FITTEST FAMILY

- BY MARGARET RODDY The Broadhurst family, Tony, Stephen, Paul and Amy.

Dundalk family The Broadhursts have thrown down the gauntlet to the other families taking part in the current series of ‘Ireland’s Fittest Families’.

Viewers on Sunday night saw dad Tony senior, sons Stephen and Paul, and daughter Amy, emerge as the fastest of the twelve families to complete the demanding obstacle course.

The Muirhevenmor family, who are best known for their boxing achievements, were snapped up by coach and former Cork All Star Camogie captain Anna Gearey who will mentor them as they take part in the next round of the competition.

This is the fourth year of the popular show presented by Mairead Rohan, and Tony reveals that although they had applied for it each year, they were unable to compete due to boxing commitments.

‘ This was the first year that we could actually enter and know that there was nothing coming up that would interfere with the trials and the television schedules.’

They were thrilled to make the final twelve families out of the initial entry of over one hundred, half of whom were then tested at the trials.

‘We were selected for the television show and are the only ones from this area,’ says Tony.

He recalled that it was pouring rain when they did the obstacle course. ‘We were standing at the starting line and it was actually raining so heavily that they told us to stand under the trees as they had to switch off the recording equipment. ‘ The course was very slippery and muddy but we were really pleased with our time when we finished it.’

The competition is now down to eight families after the first two shows and next Sunday will see them take on the Hang Tough challenge in Dublin’s Docklands.
