Never a dull mo

- JOHN SAVAGE

THEY never take the easy ‘Rhode’ down at the O’Mahony’s.

The more twists, turns and bumps the better, it seems, but invariably the men from the Quay hit the chequered in pole position and this amazing Leinster campaign has been no different.

They led Baltinglass by three points heading down the home stretch and Sarsfields by seven midway through the second-half.

It’s not ideal, but it’s certainly character building and Liam Dullaghan insists that as they keep coming out on the right side, O’Mahony’s will soldier on regardless.

‘We struggle when we get a big lead. When the goal goes in and the ref says there’s still 1520 minutes left that’s a lifetime. We need to improve on that because you won’t get away with inviting good teams on to you too often.

‘We don’t beat any team by eight or nine points, so when it is tight and in the melting pot, the experience helps. You look around and see boys grafting like John O’Brien, Conor Martin Shane Brennan, Ronan Byrne. Everyone gels together and I don’t know what it is but we seem to know when it’s time to pull together.’

O’Mahony’s secret may be out locally following their rags to riches rise from Intermediate also-rans to Leinster IFC winners to Louth Senior champions, but Dullaghan feels they can still spring a surprise on teams further afield.

‘We only broke through to senior last year and Sarsfields have a bit of history, so you can understand why people had us as underdogs. We were a bit of an unknown quantity, but I don’t think it’ll be the same this time around.

‘We’re looking to put our stamp on this Leinster campaign now and people might start taking a bit of notice of us now. We’ll give Rhode all the respect we gave Baltinglass and Sarsfields, but they might take a wee
