Louth Colleges on top in derby

GAA TOP OIL LEINSTER COLLEGES ‘A’ CHAMPIONSHIP

- Louth Colleges Dundalk’s Conor Loughran takes on Louth’s Donal McKenny. Dundalk Colleges

Dundalk looked to be more than holding their own when Conor Loughran fired past Brendan O’Hagan to open a 1-4 to 0-5 lead.

Louth had made the better start with Eoin McDaid and Conor Gillespie opening their account.

Liam Jackson added a third after Shane Byrne had pulled one back for Dundalk and despite being forced to play somewhat on the break, Dundalk kept in touch before hitting the front through Loughran.

But Louth hit back ruthlessly before the break with Jack Murphy putting a point between the sides, followed swiftly by a composed finish from Shane Matthews. The impressive Conor Gillespie made it 1-7 to 1-4 at the interval with a late point.

The full forward struck twice more within five minutes of the re-start and further scores from Matthews and Cathal Grogan put Louth firmly in control, 1-11 to 1-4.

And if Dundalk harbourned any hopes of forcing their way back into the game, they were dashed by two goals in quick succession from Leonard Gray and Conor Kenny.

To their credit the Dundalk men didn’t throw in the towel and the impressive Loughran netted his second goal, before adding a point for good measure.

But there was no way back for Dundalk at that stage and substitute Finbar Lynch added a fourth goal for Louth at the death.
