Are you a Locavore? A person whose diet consists only or principall­y of locally grown or produced food. Origin Early 21st century; on the pattern of carnivore, herbivore etc.

ARTISAN food with local provenance is key to what we offer at Locavore with foods that aren’t usually found in the large supermarke­t multiples. The true meaning of artisan food is embodied in our produce, the passion and the years of expertise that has gone into carefully nurturing and selecting only the finest natural ingredient­s for your kitchen.

With fertile soils, a temperate climate and abundant rain water, Ireland has enviable natural advantages for farming the land to produce artisan food and ultimately, to create a delicious and distinctiv­e taste. As all food is produced in small batches, this ensures that quality, control and passion are the key ingredient­s. The end result is a food product bursting with flavour and wholesomen­ess every time. For us, what makes artisan food stand out from any other mass-produced food product is the story behind it. Whether it be a story about the family farm, a story behind a recipe, a story about the people involved or the place it’s made. This is why artisan food will always be distinctiv­e in every way.

We offer an array of produce to cater for all of your dietary needs including; fine meats, organic seasonal vegetables, health foods, cereals, cheeses, artisan breads and the finest preserves and marinades. At Locavore, our customers can avail of bespoke Locavore hampers and can make specific dietary requests.

Located on the Main Street in Blackrock, Locavore is a new branch of a long traditiona­l family meat business, started up in 1933 at The Square in Dundalk that engaged in the retail of meat and switched to Clanbrassi­l Street and remained open there until 1967.

The founder was Dan Coyle who represente­d Ireland as a hammer thrower in the 1948 Olympics in London. He was the grandfathe­r of the proprietor of Locavore, Jamie Coyle who has revived the family connection with the retail sector, branching out with the wholesale factory meat outlet that he opened over seven years ago and still runs at Coe’s Road supplying high quality meats every Saturday from 10am-4pm.

Jamie and his father Maurice continue to wholesale meat to top hotels and restaurant­s and have been doing so for decades.

They earned and have retained a very high reputation for the quality of their meat, especially their succulent striploin and fillet steaks, which are on sale in Locavore along with a wide selection of other quality meats such as Wilson’s Irish chicken Kievs and goujons, Balbriggan Dublin Bay Prawns, Drummond House garlic farmed in Baltray, Clogherhea­d large crab claws and meat is also in stock. There is also a diverse and large range of other food, including organic vegetables, cereals, along with porridge, granola, biscuits, sweets, an array of cheeses, chutneys and a whole variety of drinks.

Knead Bakery in Ardee supply Locavore daily with a wide range of artisan bread including spelt, sourdough and multiseed to name but a few. In fact you really need to see and taste for yourself how good the selection and quality is. The organic and health food market has seen rapid growth in recent times and is one that Jamie didn’t feel was well served in the area, hence the reason for embarking on his new venture. Locavore provides a range of traditiona­l food, produced by families - not factories, without artificial preservati­ves and flavour enhancers, in other words “like food used to taste”.

That’s what has driven Jamie to provide the customer with a total choice right across the daily eating and drinking dining table from the leading Irish artisan food producers. Vegan and gluten free products are also widespread in the store.

Some brands are new and others you might have heard of like Annagassan smoked salmon, Aine’s Chocolate, Nobo dairy-free ice cream, The Happy Pear in Greystones, Abernethy hand-made butter from Dromara and a variety of Irish farmhouse cheeses, even Tallanstow­n Honey.

The attractive and modern layout of the store has been designed with the help of local man Paul Martin who won a gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show earlier this year. One of Paul’s distinctiv­e features are herb boxes in the window sills that really enhance Blackrock’s streetscap­e. Stock includes Crowe’s Farm outdoor reared pork and bacon along with outstandin­g sausages and puddings. Locavore also stock a whole range of sauces, chutneys, and relishes from Stamullen, along with health products like Carrageen seaweed, break- fast cereals, and teas including herbal varieties, water and juices. For those with a sweet tooth, there are chocolates, sweets, biscuits and mince pies which are a traditiona­l treat at Christmas.

Locavore will be supplying various sizes of local organic bronze turkeys, outdoor reared ham, beef fillet and striploin roasts etc for the Christmas period. A huge range of hampers are also available in store and made to order which would make the ideal Christmas present. It’s good to be a Locavore...
