Urban Council approve civic amenity centre
December 1996
DUNDALK urban council approves in principle the provision of a civic amenity facility and re-cycling centre at its landfill site on the Newry Road.
It will be carried out in three phases, the first of which will involve providing a basic civic amenity together with suitable storage to act as a drop-off centre for the amalgamation of re-cyclable materials from neighbourhood recycling centres.
The civic amenity will be operated in conjunction with a basic transport station.
Phase two will be the construction of a waste segregation facility, incorporated, as required, pre-treatment equipment, such as crushers/balers, to enhance the value of waste recovered.
Phase three will involve the construction of a compositing area, depending on assessments of viability.
The estimated cost of phases 1 and 2 is £412,846 and £278,500, respectively, but no costs is ascertained for phase 3.
A consultants’ report on the development is circulated to councillors.
The objective is to reduce the quantities of waste materials which need to be consigned to landfill, and to assist local re-cycling firms to expand operations and encourage other agencies to actively participate in re-cycling.
The council will be expected to upgrade and develop the site to receive the public’s continued support of using the site as a waste disposal facility for the area.
The report also states that by centralising all waste disposal activities, the council hopes to minimise costs and maximise the management of their statutory obligations.
Councillors generally welcome the proposal, but feel they should have an opportunity to discuss it more fully with consultants, Malachi Cullen and Partners.
