Glens give title bid a major boost

-

GLENMUIR 4 CASTLE VILLA 1 GLENMUIR closed temporarily to within a point of the leaders of the fourth division and gave their promotion and title chances a real shot in the arm with this win over mid table opponents on their return to action after a three week festive break on Friday night.

With all their remaining games with possibly one exception also at home at Glenmuir Park, they really have it within their own hands to finish their first season back in the North East League in a blaze of glory.

They bounced back from falling behind in this game. The visitors took the lead after 20 minutes, but it only lasted five minutes with Eamon Kenny placing his shot from the edge of the box into the top corner of the visitors net.

The home side had a few chances then to go ahead, the best falling to Conor Nicholson who was unfortunate when he turned on the edge of the box and his shot rebounded back off the post.

However, they did take the lead five minutes from the break when a free kick by Alan Quigley dropped ten yards out from goal for Lorcan Doyle to volley the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Chances were sparse after the break, but Conor Nicholson effectively sealed victory for Glenmuir 20 minutes from time,

Ronan Hande who was introduced at the break and made a real mark was the architect as he beat a man and darted forward to whip in a cross that Nicholson converted on the volley from ten yards.

Lorcan Doyle notched his second goal to put the result beyond doubt. Kenny provided another assist with a through pass that his teammate side footed past the visitors goalkeeper.

Glenmuir are quickly back in action this Wednesday, when they play host to BMC who they drew with two all away from home in the first round. GLENMUIR: David Hayes, Edgar Bitanis, Peter McDermott, Shane Finnegan, Willie Kelly, Eamon Kenny, David Hughes ( Ronan Hands), Lorcan Doyle, Brendan Sheils, Conor Nicholson, Alan Quigley(Alan Quigley).
