Major fund raiser for Sr. Consilio’s
ADDICTION CENTRE HELPS PEOPLE FROM DUNDALK AND SURROUNDING AREA
The Cuan Mhuire Addiction Support Centre recently launched a major fundraising initiative ‘ The Qube Gameshow’ based on the concept of the TV game show, which will take place on Saturday February 4 in the Canal Court Hotel Newry and which has secured Dundalk Bureau de Change as a major sponsor. The Cuan Mhuire Regional Addiction Support Centre based in Newry, affectionately known as Sr Consilio’s after the Kerry born nun who founded her first rehabilitation centre just over 50 years ago, provides residential addiction support services to individuals and their families, throughout the North and in the border counties, including Louth. Katie Bennett of Cuan Mhuire fundraising team explained: ‘ The Qube Gameshow fundraising event will entertain our contestants and guests while raising much needed funds for Cuan Mhuire. ‘Fundraising is essential if we in Cuan Mhuire are to continue delivering our life saving and life changing services. Cuan Mhuire is a non-profit registered charity and is partly funded by national agencies, however our centres are constantly full and have a waiting list but resources are always inadequate to meet the crushing level of need. ‘All donations go directly to our frontline services, support of our residents, and their families. We strive to encourage our residents to live a healthier independent and addiction-free life. Cuan Mhuire is focused on healing the harm addiction causes to individuals, their families and communities. Our residential services are open to all men and women over the age of 18. ‘At any given time, Cuan Mhuire caters nationally for well in excess of 600 people in residence. Around 3,000 people are admitted annually for residential treatment and support to our treatment centres. We offer family support to the relatives of those in treatment. ‘We also provide a two year aftercare programme to those in recovery and their families, 120 group meetings per programme, 270 aftercare meetings a year, 250 family conferences a year and 208 AA/GA meetings a year. In addition, we have developed an ‘Outreach Programme’ to meet the needs of school children, young adults, parents. ‘We travel across Northern Ireland and the border counties to educate young adults and children on the risks associated with alcohol and gambling addiction, such as mental and physical health problems, anti-social behaviour, homelessness and unemployment. We deliver information on the services we provide and what help is available both from ourselves and elsewhere. Finally we invite students and community groups to visit our centre for group discussions and see our services at first hand’. Katie extended an invitation to all to come along and join in the night of fun. Tickets are available online at a cost of £10 at Ticket Tab or from our centre in Newry or the charity shop on Hill Street. The show in the Canal Court which commences at 8pm. Contestants will be set tasks that will test their physical ability, mental ability, intelligence, and responsiveness. One lucky Contestant will take first prize of £1000 courtesy of the main sponsor Dundalk Bureau De Change. The Qube will be run by the professional production crew from Dromintee GAA Club and not forgetting an entertaining master of ceremonies. The night promises to wow and entertain you, your family and friends with guest celebrities on the night and a DJ afterwards to dance the night away. Katie also thanked everyone for their continued support. She said: ‘ Cuan Mhuire is the main provider of treatment for alcohol, drug, and other addictions throughout the island of Ireland. Approximately 3,000 people are treated for addiction in our centres in Ireland every year and since its formation in 1966 by Sr. Consilio, Cuan Mhuire it has treated over 75,000 people. ‘We are deeply indebted to friends, neighbours, families, businesses and communities for their continued prayers help and support.
