Muirhevnamor extend their lead

-

MUIRHEVNAMOR extended their lead at the top of the premier division with a hard earned victory on Sunday.

The win puts them eight points clear with admittedly the teams immediately behind them with games in hand, notably the champions Navan Cosmos, who have only played seven games in the league compared with 12 by the leaders.

However, points in the bag are what it’s all about and the onus is on the pursuers to cope with the pressure of trying to win to make up the leeway.

Muirhevnamor manager Tiernan Mulvenna was pleased for his side to resume with a victory after a lengthy break for Christmas, and also because he was without a number of players.

Trim, the cup holders, are a side that the challengers will all get it hard to take points from and they showed why.

Wayne Robinson with a terrific strike from 25 yards put the leaders in front after half an hour with his shot flying into the top corner.

They had chances to score a couple of more goals only for Trim to level after 65 minutes with a goal which the visitors felt should have been disallowed for offside.

However, they held their composure and following great build-up play Paudie Hearty was put free of the home defence and he shot decisively under the Trim goalkeeper for the all important goal.

A flare up resulted in two players then being dismissed after 80 minutes, one from either side, with Gary Clarke making way for the leaders who held out comfortably in the remaining minutes to secure three precious points. MUIRHEVNAMOR: David Cooney, Steven Smith (Jimmy Cooney 65), Brian Begley, Chris Caulfield, Conall Mulvenna, Wayne Robinson, Brendan Hughes, Mickey O’Kane, Philip Duffy, Gary Clarke, Paudie Hearty.
