St Gerard’s come up just short in provincial medal pursuit

-

WITH some of Dundalk St Gerard’s more established performers not taking part it was up to the younger brigade to take up the gauntlet at the Leinster Indoors last weekend.

First time Leinster competitor Ciara Cunningham was first into action in the U12 girls 600m. In a very strong encounter she ran an excellent race to finish fourth in her heat, unfortunately missing out on the final.

Next up in the 60m she continued the good form with a great win in her heat. In the semi final she was right in contention again with another fine fourth place finish.

Lastly she took part in the shot putt where she once again gave her all.

This was a great showing from Ciara who will benefit greatly from the experience gained. Mia Keely competed in the U12 girls long jump and gave a good account of herself. Despite not jumping her best she gained valuable experience at this higher level of competition.

Next into action were Patricia Jumbo-Gula and Ellen McBride in the U15 girls 60m.

Patricia had a slow start in her heat and despite making up ground was unable to progress.

Ellen made no mistake in her heat, springing from the blocks to win.

In the semi-final once again she showed her class finishing second to make the final. In the decider she ran another blinder just missing out on the medals in a very tight finish for the placings in fourth.

Joe Lennon had his first taste of Leinster competition in the U15 boys 60m. Joe has been showing steady progress over the last month and didn’t disappoint on the day.

Showing great speed and power he won his way through the heats and semi final to take his place in the decider.

Once again he showed up really well just missing out on a medal in fourth place showing that with some more work over the next few months he can really make an impact at this level.
